is characterized by a rejoicing in the freedom conferred by the impossibility of truth which modernism lamented.

At the beginning of the 20th century, experimental art and literature challenged the dominance of realism, proclaimed it the effect of a trick, and broke with its values to acknowledge the inaccessibility of the truth itself at the level of the signifier. One branch of the new experimentalism - Lyotard calls it ‘modernism’ -lamented the impossibility of truth and devoted itself to defining in stories and artworks a nostalgia for lost presence. The other, the postmodern, rejoiced in the freedom this impossibility conferred.
