At the beginning of the 20th century, experimental art and literature challenged the dominance of realism, proclaimed it the effect of a trick, and broke with its values to acknowledge the inaccessibility of the truth itself at the level of the signifier. One branch of the new experimentalism - Lyotard calls it ‘modernism’ -lamented the impossibility of truth and devoted itself to defining in stories and artworks a nostalgia for lost presence.
