is not being 'here' instead of over there, but is 'the possibility' of oriented being here and being over there.' The 'there' (da) is not a place but the space opened up and illuminated by being.

The 'There [das Da]' is the space it opens up and illuminates: 'The 'There [Das 'Da']' is not a place [. . . ] in contrast to an 'over there' ['dort']... Da-sein means not being here instead of over there, nor here and over there, but is the possibility, the condition of oriented being here and being over there' (XXVII, 136).  exists, and it alone. That is because to 'existence' is to stand out and to perdure the openness of the there: Ek-sistence.

is everyday existence; it is a kind of skilled existence. It is not something occurrent which possesses its competence for something by way of an extra. Rather, it is primarily its ability to be. Dasein is in every case what it can be.

We are skilled at existing. 'In understanding, as an existentiale, that which we have such competence over is not a 'what,' but being as existing' (183)[143]. Moreover, we are such skills. 'Dasein is not something occurrent which possesses its competence for something by way of an extra... it is primarily its ability to be. Dasein is in every case what it can be' (183)[l43]. is everydayness. It exists as an entity in general already always coming to itself, that is to say, it is futural in its being in general.

anticipating makes Dasein authentically futural, to be sure, such that the anticipating itself is only possible insofar as Dasein as an entity in general is already always coming to itself, that is to say, is futural in its being in general.'(FN20 (heidegger in Dahlstrom 9950.)

is a being for which, in its being, that being is itself an issue. Dasein is essentially ahead of itself and has projected itself upon its ability to be before going on to any mere consideration of itself as care (i.e., as existing in the unity of the projection which has been fallingly thrown this entity has been disclosed as a 'there'.

I can only define human Dasein as a living being that always has before it a not-yet being. When I am no longer alive, however, I will no longer be in a position to experience this whole [Ganzheit]. is a nominalized infinitive, it has no plural form. It refers to any and every human being, in much the same way as das seiende : That which is.

As a nominalized infinitive, Dasein has no plural. It refers to any and every human being, in much the way that das Seiende, lit. 'that which is', refers to any and every BEING. When more than one person is in play Heidegger speaks of (the) other(s) or Dasein-with (Mitdasein). He revives the original sense, 'being there', often writing Da-sein to stress this. (INWOOD 42)

is a technical term that helps free us from the artificial subject/object distinction and allows us to see self and the world belong together in a single entity of there-being.

For Martin Heidegger, a student of Husserl's, the scientific attempt to step back and examine an object severs it from its living context. He abandons the term 'subject' and introduces his notion of 'Dasein', in which self and the world belong together in a single entity.
