The need for growth what we might call immaturity is not a negative state of being. John Dewey

is not something negative or bad, but positively as the power to grow. It is the central condition for growth in children, composed of dependence and plasticity.

The central condition for growth is immaturity, a term which Dewey gives an unfamiliar but useful spin: immaturity, rather than a lack of the positive characteristics of maturity, is itself a positive indicator of the ability to grow and develop. 'Our tendency to take immaturity as mere lack, and growth as something which fills up the gap between the immature and the mature is due to regarding childhood comparatively, instead of intrinsically.' 'Taken absolutely rather than comparatively, immaturity designates a positive force or ability, the power to grow.' Immaturity in Dewey's schema is composed of two important elements: (1) dependence, which Dewey carefully distinguishes from helplessness and impotence, and (2) plasticity, which is 'the ability to learn from experience... the power to retain from one experience somethign which is of avail in coping with the difficulties of a later situation.' Based on his understanding of growth, Dewey defines education as 'the enterprise of supplying the conditions which insure growth, or adequacy of life, irrespective of age.'
