phenomenology

Edmund Husserl

Even if this were the case, there would still be a need to understand the prestige of the myth and the origin of the fashion, and philosophical seriousness will translate this situation by saying that phenomenology can be practiced and identified as a manner or style of thinking, that it existed as a move (Merleau-ponty 'what is phenomenology' : 56)

is wholly implied in a reflection on language.

Derrida's interpretation is striking because he claims that the whole of phenomenololgy is implied in a reflection on language, that a discussion of meaning, expression, grammar, and logic the themes of the Investigations will anticipate and later decide the forthcoming 'transcendental' problems.

is the art or practice of 'letting things show themselves'.

Heidegger in a quasi-poetic idiom, through the root meanings of 'logos' and 'phenomena', so that phenomenology is defined as the art or practice of 'letting things show themselves'. (stanford encylopedia)

is the study of things as they appear (phenomena).

Phenomenology, then, is the study of things as they appear (phenomena). It is also often said to be descriptive rather than explanatory: a central task of phenomenology is to provide a clear, undistorted description of the ways things appear (Husserl 1982, sec. 75). (stanford:phen)

is the act of describing not 'what' you are seeing, but instead describing the seeing.

phenomenology is the idea of describing not what you see, but describing your seeing

does not so much place itself outside of history as to remain unaffected by it.

This obviously is not done with a postulate. At first, phenomenology was not a program but an undertaking. It treated apparently quite primitive and elemental things. But returning to self-evident things concealed from the consciousness of everyday life is always the genuine path to great discoveries. Every great discoverer poses an elementary question. With its new principle, which was concealed since the classical era and discovered again from it, phenomenology aimed not so much to place itself outside of history as to remain unaffected by it. (heidegger 'struggle' : 160)

's primary subject matter is the world as given and the givenness of the world.

The reduction, then, is that which reveals to us the primary subject matter of phenomenology the world as given and the givenness of the world... both objects and acts of consciousness. (stanford:phen)

is concerned with the accessibility of the domain-of-origin of factical life.

The following semester, phenomenology’s basic problem is described as “the accessibility of the domain-of-origin of factical life.”
