Hegel holds that the SPIRIT can endure contradictions, while they result in the destruction of other, unqualifiedly FINITE, entities. This is connected with a further difference between spirit and NATURE. The dialectic of natural things and events does not mirror the dialectic of our thought about them: our thought advances dialectically from lower to higher stages of nature (e.g. from mechanical to organic nature), while the dissolution of a natural entity results in an entity of the same or a similar type (a new seed, say, of the same plant), not in a transition to a higher stage of nature. Spirit, by contrast, has a progressive history (e.g. the destruction of a state often results in a new type of state, not simply a new state of the same type), and thus its development often, though not invariably, corresponds to the advance of our thought about it. The earliest English translation of the Phenomenology renders Geist as mind, but this has implications of individual psychology which are not intended by Hegel: the individual mind is only what Hegel calls subjective spirit. Objective spirit refers to the forms that spirit takes at a level above individual consciousness... it is thus associated with community and culture in general, including custom and law. There is also absolute spirit, which includes religion, art and philosophy, and is infinite. What all forms or levels of spirit share is that they are rational, constituted by thought and self-consciousness, and consist in process or purposive activity rather than thinghood. (To define spirit any further is to take a stand on the interpretation of Hegel.)
