The They (n.) is not an individual person or people but a mode of existence at work whenever something is being done on account of the thoughtless customary, or the fact that 'that is what one does' or 'that is what people do'.
The They (n.) is so all-pervasive a way of being in our everyday lives that even when one tries to flee from the crowd, one cannot escape the fact that one must do it in the way one does it.
The They (n.) is always at work in us — even when we flee from the crowd we do it the way one does it.
The They (n.) is a way of describing how Dasein does not see the world with its own eyes, but sees it the way others do.
The They (n.) is the enemy of conscience, which frees us into responsibility for our own being-in-the-world, which, being authentic, can never belong to the they.
The They (n.) is responsible for depriving us of Death’ power to shock by telling us that death is an unlucky mishap that occurs to others sometimes, and which tranquillizes us by telling us not to worry about it yet.
The They (n.) is a kind of superficiality where everything original and deep gets treated as something obvious and well-known; where every secret loses its force.
The They (n.) is a dictatorship of sorts: we enjoy what they enjoy, have the same views on literature that they have, and find shocking whatever they find shocking.
The They (n.) is always tranquillizing us on the subject of death, preferring as it does, that we not think about it or discuss it at all.
The They (n.) is a kind of police power of sorts, as the average Dasein keeps watch over everything exceptional, to make sure that it does not somehow become threatening to the tranquility of the they.
The They (n.) is always right, and never surprised by anything, because it never gets to the heart of the matter and so never risks being wrong.
The They (n.) is everyone and no one, and tranquilizes Dasein in its being-in-the-world.
The They (n.) is unable to die, unable to assume guilt, unable to hear the call of conscience, because it is tranquillized and wishes to tranquillize everyone.
The They (n.) is merely an indefinite term for a loose, lazy, ambiguous, public sort of reality, for which no individual can be held responsible.
The They (n.) is a category of Dasein’s being that can never be removed now matter how hard we try. It is, as such, a so-called “existential” of human Dasein.
The They (n.) is always diverting us for death because the authentic certainty of death involves the courage of Angst (an individual, authentic courage that ‘the they’ can have no truck for).
The They (n.) is at once a basic and necessary feature of our Being as we exist most of the time, and also representative of inauthentic existence.
The They (n.) is not always inauthentic, for authenticity is never a departure from, but rather always a modification of ‘the they’; for even the most authentic and original artwork, political decision or personal choice is dependent on the range of possibilities available in one's culture.
The They (n.) is simply the notion that what I do is determined largely by 'what one does', and 'what one does' is something that I absorb in various ways from my culture.
The They (n.) is the neuter of the who, whereby the 'who' is not this one, not that one, not oneself, not some people, and not the sum of them all. The 'who' is the neuter, the 'they'.
